Programme Overview

The Master of Music (By Research) is designed for musicians, educators, performers, composers, and researchers who wish to advance their expertise through independent research and scholarly inquiry. This programme provides the opportunity to investigate specialised areas of music, develop original research, and contribute meaningful knowledge to the field. With guidance from experienced supervisors, you will strengthen your research, analytical, and critical thinking skills while exploring topics that align with your academic interests and professional goals.

Entry Requirements

A Bachelor’s Degree [Level 6, Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF)] in relevant fields with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.75, as accepted by the HEP Senate; OR

Bachelor’s Degree (Level 6, MQF) or equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 but below 2.75 may be accepted, subject to a rigorous internal assessment; OR

A Bachelor’s Degree in the field, a related field, or an equivalent qualification with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 but below 2.50 may be accepted, subject to a minimum of five years of relevant working experience and a rigorous internal assessment; OR

A Bachelor’s Degree (Level 6, MQF) in a non-relevant field with a minimum CGPA of 2.75, as accepted by the HEP Senate, and a minimum of five years of relevant working experience, subject to a rigorous internal assessment as determined by the HEP; OR

Other relevant and equivalent qualifications recognised by the Malaysian Government; and pass an interview, audition, or submission of the student’s portfolio/recording, as determined by the HEP.

Additional Requirements (For International Students)

English Competency Requirement (International Student):

Minimum Band 4 in Malaysian University English Test (MUET) or equivalent to The Common
European Framework (CEFR) (Mid B2): OR
Minimum score of 60 in Internet-Based Test (IBT) or equivalent score for Paper-Based Test
(PBT) for Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); OR
Minimum score of 6.0 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); OR
Minimum score of 59 for Pearson English Test; Other equivalent qualification.

* A medical check-up in Malaysia arranged by ALFA certifies that you are medically fit and in good
health to accept the offer. The university reserves the rights to withdraw this offer or terminate
your study if you are found to suffer or be a carrier of any contagious/ infectious disease, or
have a medical condition requiring continuous medical care that will adversely affect your study
at ALFA.
